But that strong chemical odour is actually caused by Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and there’s a growing awareness of their potential impact on our health and the environment. Thankfully, paint technology has come a long way. Today, Australian homeowners have access to a fantastic range of high-quality, low-VOC and zero-VOC paints that perform brilliantly without the nasty fumes. This guide will explain what VOCs are and why choosing a low-VOC option is a smarter choice for your home and family.

What Exactly Are VOCs?

VOCs are carbon-based chemicals that evaporate (or "off-gas") at room temperature. In traditional solvent-based (oil-based) paints, they were a key ingredient, helping with flow and drying. However, these compounds are released into the air as the paint dries and can continue to be released for weeks or even months afterwards. This off-gassing contributes to that lingering chemical smell and can reduce indoor air quality.

Why Choose a Low-VOC Paint?

For the vast majority of interior projects, there is no longer any reason to use high-VOC paints. The benefits of making the switch are significant:

• Better for Your Health: High concentrations of VOCs can cause short-term issues like headaches, dizziness, and respiratory irritation. Choosing a low-VOC or zero-VOC paint is a particularly smart decision for children's bedrooms, nurseries, and for anyone with asthma or chemical sensitivities.
• Low to No Odour: This is the most immediate benefit. Low-VOC paints have a much milder smell, making the painting process far more pleasant. The odour also dissipates much faster, meaning you can get back to using your rooms sooner.
• Better for the Environment: VOCs contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, a major component of smog. By choosing low-VOC products, you’re making a more environmentally responsible choice.

How to Read the Can: Decoding the Jargon

When you're at the paint shop, the labels can be confusing. Here’s what to look for:

• Water-Based vs. Solvent-Based (Oil-Based): This is the biggest indicator. Almost all modern water-based (acrylic/latex) paints are now low in VOCs. Traditional solvent-based (oil-based/enamel) paints, often used for trim and doors, are typically very high in VOCs. However, water-based enamels like Dulux Aquanamel now provide a fantastic low-VOC alternative.
• Look for the "Low VOC" or "Zero VOC" Claim: Most brands that meet the Australian Paint Approval Scheme (APAS) standards for low-VOC products will state this proudly on the front of the can.
• Check the VOC Content (g/L): The most accurate measure is the grams per litre (g/L) of VOCs, which is often listed in the technical data on the back of the can. In Australia, a paint is generally considered "low-VOC" if it is below 5 g/L. For comparison, a traditional oil-based enamel can have VOC levels of over 400 g/L.

Does "Zero VOC" Mean Toxin-Free?

It's important to note that even "Zero VOC" paint isn't completely free of chemicals. It simply means that the base paint has no volatile organic compounds. However, the total level will still be exceptionally low and far healthier than traditional paint formulas.
