Your Essential Painting Checklist

Every Tool & Supply You'll Need for a Flawless Finish

Embarking on a painting project is exciting, but nothing halts momentum faster than realising you’re missing a crucial tool halfway through the job. A perfect paint finish isn't just about the paint itself; it's about meticulous preparation and having the right equipment on hand. This comprehensive checklist is designed to prevent those extra trips to Bunnings, saving you time and ensuring your project runs smoothly from the first brushstroke to the final clean-up.

Phase 1: Surface Preparation Tools

This is the most critical phase for achieving a professional, long-lasting finish. Skipping these steps is the number one mistake DIY painters make. Proper preparation ensures your paint adheres correctly and looks smooth and even.

A collection of painting preparation tools including tape, filler, and a sanding block.
  • Drop Sheets: You'll need more than you think. Use heavy canvas drop sheets for floors as they are durable and less slippery. Use lightweight plastic sheets to cover furniture.
  • Painter's Tape: High-quality tape is non-negotiable for achieving sharp, clean lines on skirting boards, window frames, and ceilings. Look for one that seals well but removes cleanly.
  • Wall Filler: Essential for patching any cracks, dents, or nail holes in your walls before you even think about picking up a brush.
  • Putty Knife or Scraper: A flexible metal blade is perfect for applying filler smoothly and scraping away any loose, flaking paint from the surface.
  • Sanding Block & Sandpaper: Use a medium-grit sandpaper (around 120-grit) to smooth over filled patches and to lightly scuff glossy surfaces, which helps the new paint adhere.
  • Sugar Soap or Wall Cleaner: Walls accumulate dust, grease, and grime. Washing them down with a good cleaner like sugar soap is vital for proper paint adhesion.
  • Sponges and Rags: You'll need these for washing the walls and for wiping up any small spills as you go.

Phase 2: Painting Application Tools

With your surfaces prepped and ready, it's time to gather the tools for the main event. Using quality applicators will make a noticeable difference in your final result, reducing streaks, drips, and frustration.

Painting application tools including a brush, roller, and tray.
  • Undercoat: Crucial for painting over dark colours, covering stains, or painting bare surfaces like new gyprock walls or wood. It seals the surface and provides a neutral base for your topcoat.
  • Paint (Topcoat): Ensure you have calculated how much you need for at least two full coats. It’s always better to have a little extra for touch-ups later.
  • Paint Trays: You’ll need at least one for your roller. Consider getting disposable tray liners to make clean-up significantly faster.
  • Paint Brushes: A good 50mm-63mm angled brush is your best friend for creating those sharp edges around trim and ceilings where a roller can't reach.
  • Paint Rollers & Covers: A standard 230mm roller is perfect for walls. Pay attention to the nap (thickness) of the roller cover – use a shorter nap (e.g., 10mm) for smooth surfaces and a longer nap (e.g., 20mm) for textured walls.
  • Extension Pole: A must-have for painting ceilings and high walls. It will save your back and shoulders and allow you to maintain a wet edge for a more even finish.
  • Paint Stirrers: Often free at the paint shop. Essential for mixing your paint thoroughly before you start, as colour pigments can settle at the bottom of the can.

Phase 3: Safety & Clean-up

Don’t neglect the final phase. Being prepared for clean-up makes the end of the project far less of a chore.

  • Sturdy Step Ladder: Ensure it's the right height for the job and always place it on a stable, level surface.
  • Bucket: A simple bucket is invaluable for mixing up cleaning water and washing brushes and rollers.
  • Old Clothes, Gloves, and Safety Glasses: Protect yourself from splatters and drips. Safety glasses are particularly important when painting ceilings.
