A perfect paint finish isn't just about the paint itself; it's about meticulous preparation and having the right equipment on hand. This comprehensive checklist is designed to prevent those extra trips to Bunnings, saving you time and ensuring your project runs smoothly from the first brushstroke to the final clean-up.

Phase 1: Surface Preparation Tools

This is the most critical phase for achieving a professional, long-lasting finish. Skipping these steps is the number one mistake DIY painters make. Proper preparation ensures your paint adheres correctly and looks smooth and even.

• Drop Sheets: You'll need more than you think. Use heavy canvas drop sheets for floors as they are durable and less slippery. Use lightweight plastic sheets to cover furniture.
• Painter's Tape: High-quality tape is non-negotiable for achieving sharp, clean lines on skirting boards, window frames, and ceilings. Look for one that seals well but removes cleanly.
• Wall Filler: Essential for patching any cracks, dents, or nail holes in your walls before you even think about picking up a brush.
• Putty Knife or Scraper: A flexible metal blade is perfect for applying filler smoothly and scraping away any loose, flaking paint from the surface.
